Ça y est! It’s back to school time for all the little French kiddos!! Whooo hooo!
**Drops the kids off and then breaks out a bottle of champagne at 8:32 am**
This little man is starting Moyenne Section, or the second year of pre-school. Call me biased if you may, be he looked too stinking cute for his first day back!
He’s excited, but I’m a tad nervous because he’s been refusing to speak French ever since we returned from our summer in the USA. I know he’ll pick it right back up once he’s surrounded by all of his little French-speaking copains (friends), but for now he’s sure to be the cutest little English speaker in his school…. well, technically he’ll probably be the only one!
And this sweet girl is going into … drum roll… CP! If you’re not French, that means nothing to you but here in France transitioning into CP, or le cours préparatoire, is H.U.G.E.
In CP, which is the age equivalent of first grade in the USA, French kids go from being treated like pre-schoolers to be being treated like high schoolers. Ok, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but I’ve heard that the change is stark.
In addition to perfecting the art of reading, CP is the year where French kids start having homework and where the communication lines between parents and teachers become much more formal. Gone are the days of being able to chat with the teacher at pick-up or drop-off! From what I’m told, from here on out, the only way we’ll get to even see her teacher is by appointment. Needless to say, as a mom, I’m a little anxious about this big transition!
*Snip snip – cutting the umbilical cord*
Leilani, on the other hand, seemed so ready and excited for school today. She looked insanely grown up, but I could feel her little heart beating out of her chest while she waited to find out what class she was going to be in!
Now that they’re off to school, I’m going to say a little prayer for the kiddos and then get to work on my mile-long To Do List. But first, champagne! 🙂 Cheers to the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year!
How did the whole “Back to School” thing go for your kids? Am I the only one who’s torn between being super excited and a little melancholic about the whole thing?
