So, I know that up until yesterday I’ve been kind of MIA lately… my bad!
I’ve been trying to push my blogger guilt aside and soak up every minute I have stateside with my family this summer, but if we’re being honest, I’ve been relatively unsuccessful at ignoring the little voice in my head that keeps repeating You’re totally dropping the blogging ball!
Thankfully, things finally slowed down a tiny bit this week, leaving me just enough time to pull together not one, but two posts for you this week! And just like that, my guilty blogger conscious is relieved, as least for now:)
In case you missed it, yesterday I gave you a glimpse at my favorite picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Make sure you check them out! The sale is now officially open to the public, so this stuff will sell out fast!
But enough of that – let’s get down to some Five on Friday / Friday Favorites / Oh Hey! Friday business:
ONE: The Limited is one of my favorite places to shop. They’re having a sale right now, so I couldn’t help but pick up a few things, like this Sheer Inset Shoulder Tunic in black.
My favorite find, however, would definitely have to be this Striped Summer Tunic Tank. This shirt is so comfortable and classy, plus I love that it’s longer in the back. Fair warning: this tank will be on repeat for the rest of the summer!
TWO – This week I was digging through the attic at my parents house looking for something and I accidentally ran across a box full of things from my dad’s time in the U.S. Navy. My dad carried this little pocket diary with him the entire time he served, studiously noting the course of their ship on the map inside.
I’ve heard bits and pieces about the countries my dad visited, but to see it all mapped out made it seem so real! I can just imagine the young, handsome guy that my father was (and still is), sitting in that huge sea-faring vessel, documenting the boat’s course during what was certainly one of the greatest adventures of his life.
THREE – In one of my most popular posts, Nutrition: 6 Game-Changing Rules to Live By, I mentioned that I don’t drink any sugary drinks, but rather drink almost exclusively water (with my daily coffee of course).
FOUR – My dad recently announced his retirement from the Greensboro Fire Department, effective August 31.
Big deal, you might be thinking…
Well, actually, it’s a HUGE Deal. My dad is what the firefighters refer to as the Godfather of the GFD. He has served for an astounding 50 years and 8 months, including his military time. So yeh, it’s definitely a big deal.
Captain O, as the guys affectionately call him, is much more than just a Senior Captain. He is the guy that kicks the rookies’ butts into shape. He is the man doing one handed push-ups and talking on the phone, while the rookies whimper and whine and beg for their mamas. He is the Captain that sticks up for his men, even if it means taking heat from his own superiors. He has put out more fires, cut open more cars, mentored more young firefighters, and saved more lives than most firemen could ever dream of.
As one of the Battalion Chiefs recently explained, my dad is nothing short of a legend:
His influence is going to go far beyond even our time here…So we use that term legend and he is it- he is the legend of the GFD. There will be no other, there will be nobody else that comes along like this, ever. So when we celebrate him and we talk about and we reminisce, this is it: There will be no one else like this…When we talk about the Godfather of the GFD, this is the Godfather….
The mark of the success of a career is absolutely not by what rank you achieve, but by the respect of your peers and there is no one that has more respect than you.
I am so proud of my dad and feel so blessed to be able to be stateside as we celebrate his legacy. So, while I may be dropping the blogging ball, I am helping organize retirement celebrations and spending as much time as possible at Station #5 with my dad and the firemen that have been such an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember.
FIVE – After a little over one month and three weeks of playing single mom, I am thrilled to say that my handsome French hubby finally arrives in North Carolina tomorrow. I’m not sure who’s more excited, me or the kids!
The only down side to his arrival is that it means our departure is imminent. T-minus 3 weeks ’til we say au revoir to our family and friends here in North Carolina and hop a plane back to France…
Okay, that’s all for now! Hope you guys all have a fabulous weekend. Between retirement party planning and catching up with the hubby, I’m hoping to squeeze in a few hours at the pool with the family. Temperatures are supposed to be in the mid to upper 90’s here in NC! I’m sweating just thinking about it…
Oh, and maybe – just maybe – I’ll get to read a few pages in the book I’ve been working on for far too long! I’ve got an ever-growing stack of books beside my bed, but I’m really struggling to find down time to read this summer!
What about you? Anything fun on your agendas this weekend?
